Yesterday, NC Insurance Commissioner & State Fire Marshall Mike Causey made a visit to Yancey County. “The main focus of the visit was to highlight the need and discuss ways to improve firefighter recruitment and retention across North Carolina. Some of the reasons mentioned for declining recruitment and retention is youth involvement in other activities and the increased number of hours and training required to be a volunteer firefighter. The Commissioner said that the problem is serious enough in some eastern counties of the state, like New Hanover County, that the county had to take over all the volunteer fire departments because of the lack of volunteers (courtesy of WKYK).”

Commissioner Causey stopped by the Burnsville Fire Department where he was greeted by Sheriff Gary Banks, Bradley Boone (Lieutenant & Arson Investigator, Yancey County Sheriff’s Office), Jerry Laws (NC Fire & Commission Member), Keith Presnell (former County Commissioner and NC State Senator) and John Anglin (Yancey GOP Chairman). Commissioner Causey was accompanied by April Riddle, who we all know from her service as Governor Pat McCrory’s WNC Regional Director and now serves in that role for Commissioner Causey.

At last month’s Yancey County GOP Executive Committee meeting, Chairman John Anglin read a resolution commending long time District Chairman David Sawyer for his 19+ years of distinguished service. The resolution was adopted unanimously that evening.

While at the NCGOP State Convention in Wilmington, several members from the Yancey delegation had the opportunity to dine with Chairman Sawyer, his wife, daughter and several other delegates from the 11th District. This offered the perfect opportunity to present Chairman Sawyer with the resolution from Yancey County and thank him personally for his dedication to the Republican Party.
